Hobart Relay For Life January Update

Dear Hobart Relayers,

Happy 2012 and we hope this finds you all well and looking forward to Hobart Relay For Life on 17-18th March, 2012. The event starts with the Opening Ceremony at 2 pm on Saturday the 17th March and finishes with the Closing Ceremony at 10 am on Sunday 18th March.
By now Team Captains should have all received their marketing material including posters, guidebooks and DL brochures. If anyone needs more receipt books or donations boxes, please get in touch to arrange.
Keep registering your team members (either via online or manually) as soon as you can and if you know anyone who is still keen to put in a team but yet to do so, encourage them to register and not leave it too late.
Registrations for new teams will close on:  Friday 2nd March.

Team Update & Top Fundraisers so far:

We now have 77 teams registered and they have so far raised over $94, 000 which is a fantastic effort - well done everyone!  Welcome to all those new teams who have just joined up over the past month.
The Slip Slop Slappers team, who have been very busy fundraising for a while now, have so far raised just over $11, 000 which is a fantastic effort with still 2 months to go. TCM are closely behind, after some very successful fundraisers with just over $10, 500.

Other busy and/or big teams that have so far raised over $5000 include:
  • Mel's Lap Dancers
  • Barb's Mad Hatters
  • Positive Attitude
Teams who have already raised over $2000 include:
  • Family Ties
  • Rosny Relay Rockers
  • Daves Army
  • Renegades
  • Gyggles
  • Crawford Tart(an)s
  • Dragons Abreast & Friends
  • Fallen Angels
There are also 7 teams that have banked over $1000, so well done to everyone on a great effort so far.
These figures are current at the time of writing and include registration income, therefore bigger teams and those with a lot of people signed up already have a bigger tally. But every little bit counts and combined with every teams contributions we will have a wonderful contribution to make to Cancer Council Tasmania's research, support,  education and research programs in the fightback against cancer - an insidious disease that effects so many Tasmanian families in so many ways. The good news, though, is that Tasmanians now raise more money per capita for Relay For Life than any other state in Australia!

Registering a Team:

On the Relay For Life website: www.relayforlife.org.au you can create, register and join teams or sponsor teams & individuals. Just navigate to the Tasmania button and then Hobart Relay, to register or join a team. By registering on-line, you save quite a bit of paperwork and administration for both the Team Captains and Cancer Council, hence this is the preferred method of registering for Relay in 2012. If you wish to register manually, call the Hobart Relay Office on 62337250 or email: ssprott@cancertas.org.au and we can either email or post a registration form for you to complete and return.

The Relay website features some great fundraising tips, ideas and tools and you can download resources including posters and booklets with some innovative ideas about fundraising. Click here to download the Fundraising Ideas & Guidelines booklet.

Collecting Shirts:

For 2012 we would like to reduce postage costs and therefore want to avoid posting out team shirts in dribs and drabs. The preference is for Team Captains to call (62337250) or email (ssprott@cancertas.org.au)  to arrange when they would like to collect shirts once they have enough worth picking up or to collect all shirts once final numbers known. We realise this isn't always convenient for some teams, so if you need your team shirts mailed out to you, let us know so we can accommodate your needs as best we can.

Organising Committee Update - Volunteers:

The Hobart Relay Organising Committee would like to trial a new system of volunteering at the 2012 Relay For Life in Hobart. A suggestion was made that many of the Relayers attending at the weekend would like to offer an hour or so as a casual volunteer over the weekend. Therefore the Committee has identified several areas that would be greatly assisted by ad-hoc volunteers.
Closer to the event when we have the majority of team members signed up, we will be  in touch to see who may be interested in volunteering and we'll provide them with a list of tasks in which the would-be vollies can express an interest. Applicants will be emailed a brief position description of the offered task identifying time, location and details of task allocated. So stay tuned....!

Team Captains Meeting:

Date: Monday 27th February
Time: 6-7pm
Where: Hobart Town Hall, 50 Macquarie St (opposite The Mercury)
This is an important meeting so team attendance by the Team Captain or a team representative is required.  There will be detailed information handed out about the event including what to bring, parking, bus timetable, catering, entertainment, camping and a chance for any last minute questions & clarification.
An agenda and more details will be emailed out to Team Captains closer to the meeting.

Team Captain Request for Human Interest Stories for the media:

Cancer Council Tasmania’s media unit is on the hunt for some human-interest stories to promote Relay in the local media. We are seeking unusual stories that we can use as a “hook” to persuade media to publish the info in order to create interest and encourage more people to enter and be involved in Hobart Relay. If any Team Captain feels they have a compelling or unusual story about their team or about an individual in their team that might be a potential media story, please get in touch with us and tell us about it.

Slip Slop Slappers:
Relay For Life Garden Party

Time:     2 - 5 pm Monday 13 Feb 2012
Location: 5 Nimala Street, Rosny Point
Cost: $20 entry donation
The Slip Slop Slappers RFL Team will be holding Garden Party on Royal Hobart Regatta Day and invite you to come along and help them to raise funds for Relay for Life 2012. Food and drinks will be included. A raffle and other activities will be conducted during the afternoon – anyone who would like to support Relay for Life is welcome to attend.

It is inspiring to see so many teams making the most of the facilities and kind co-operation at places like Bunnings & K & D to hold their fundraising BBQ's over coming months - lots of sausages are being sold to raise money for teams and feed hungry shoppers!

Public Liability - Are you covered?

Cancer Council Public Liability can cover the majority of fundraising events, however, it is vital that teams contact ssprott@cancertas.org.au or their local team coordinator if you have been asked to provide a copy of Public Liability Insurance from a third party, for example, Bunnings, City Council, Shopping Centre, Venue etc. Teams will be given a form to fill out and if the activity is approved for cover, the Public Liability Certificate will be forwarded to the Team Captain to pass onto the organisation requesting it. Some events that are deemed too high risk will not be covered, but we can suggest insurers for teams to get their own cover. Please allow two weeks for this process to go through.

A reminder where the funds you raise go:

The funds you raise enable Cancer Council Tasmania to continue to provide and improve its services in the areas of support, information, research, transport and advocacy. These things include: transport 2 treatment, research grants and scholarships, cancer prevention activities, cancer specific support groups and education programs, the Cancer Council Helpline, Cancer information, our regional support centres and our mobile support service, MISS Hope and ManVan.

Please feel free to forward this newsletter on to any other team members, family, friends or anyone you think may be interested.

On behalf of Cancer Council Tasmania and Relay For Life Hobart Organising Committee, thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to seeing you all at the 2012 Hobart Relay.
